Mardi Gras Mania in Sydney: My My, How Can I Resist You?!

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is held in Australia every year and has an amazing range of fun events to do during this exciting three week extravaganza.  The infamous carnival and parade is the highlight of the Mardi Gras and is quite an experience to watch! It’s the biggest and most spectacular celebration of gay and lesbian culture in the entire world and is as fun and fabulous as it sounds.

Held once a year, thousands of people line the streets to take in the action and watch the flamboyant spectacle on the streets of Sydney. It doesn’t matter if you are gay or straight, it’s worth checking out this colourful party. The atmosphere is amazing…the crowds go berserk applauding and cheering and the buzz is unbelievable.

The parade kicks off with the “dykes on bikes”, the leather clad lesbian’s motorcycle club. Then it’s the start of the spectacular parade of hundreds of floats. The costumes are outrageous and make Priscilla Queen of the Desert look dull!   There are boys dressed as girls and girls dressed as boys and girls dressed as boys, dressed as girls… confused?  Me too, but that’s all part of the fun!

There are near naked dancers everywhere and people dance around wearing leather body stockings and, well, not a lot else! There are drag queens on roller skates and stilts, a gay circus and a load more nakedness. Then you can party the night away in true wild style with some amazing international DJ’s who take over Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter for a night you will never forget.

I had so much fun when I went to Mardi Gras; I’d never seen anything like it before but, to lay it ‘bare’…it was brilliant!
