The Best European Festivals

No one does a festival quite like the Europeans! From tomato-slinging to beer-swigging, any excuse for a party and Europe delivers in a heartbeat. Check out our list of the best festivals in Europe that you should need to visit!

La Tomatina

Imagine a whole town tossing tomatoes at one another until the streets run red with ketchup. That’s La Tomatina!

No one is quite sure how this crazy tradition started. The most popular theory is that nearly a century ago, disgruntled townspeople began hurling tomatoes at passing city councilmen. They enjoyed it so much that they repeated it the next year, and the year after that. And why not? It’s super fun (and messy)!

Oktoberfest

Long tables, loads of people and gallons of the good stuff. Oktoberfest is a beer-lover’s paradise. This drunken delight dates back to the 19th century, when everyone got together on a field to celebrate a royal marriage. The beer flowed, the people were merry and no one looked back. Now Oktoberfest is an international hit, with beer-lovers coming from all over the globe to get together, drink beer and dance on the tables.

Benecassim

You know what Glastonbury’s missing? How about glorious sunshine and a spectacular beach?

Benecassim is an epic music festival on the Spanish coast that draws some of the biggest names in the music business (Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kasabian and Stormzy were among the line-up at this year’s festival!). Dance until your flip-flops break and then jump into the sparkling blue sea at this stunning Spanish festival.

San Vino Wine Fight

Like the sound of La Tomatina, but fancy something boozier? Well how about the San Vino Wine Fight in Spain? This epic festival does exactly what it says on the tin. Grab some wine and soak anyone and everyone you see. Whether you’re a water gun sharp-shooter, or an old-fashioned bucket slinger, you’ll have a whale of a time at this messy Spanish festival.

Sziget Festival

Fast becoming one of Europe’s most iconic festivals, Sziget brings together a huge range of music and creativity. Taking place in Budapest on a leafy island on the Danube River, this year’s line-up includes Pink, alt-J and The Chainsmokers. Hit it while it’s still up and coming. You won’t regret it.
